Is Insurance Biblical?

Have you ever wondered if insurance is Biblical? Christians seem to take both sides in the argument. Let's address this question once and for all.

There are some who believe that purchasing insurance shows a lack of faith in God. After all, God will provide, right? It is true that God has the power to provide for all of our needs; however, God also expects us to take action. For instance, should we expect God to nourish our bodies if we are unwilling to eat? We must take some kind of initiative.

"He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous" - Matthew 5:45b.

In other words, bad things happen to good people, even those that have accepted Christ as savior. Insurance can help provide for our families in these times of need.

God calls upon us to be intelligent: "By wisdom, a house is built" - Proverbs 24:3.

God calls upon us to plan: Luke 14:28-30.

God calls upon us to take precautions from potential dangers: "The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it" - Proverbs 27:12

Most importantly, God calls upon us to make sure our families are taken care of: "Take care of your family, especially those of your own household, or you will be considered worse than an unbeliever" - 1 Timothy 5:8.

Insurance is often overlooked or brushed aside. It is one of our favorite things to procrastinate about. I've worked with people whose lives were flipped upside down when their spouse or parent(s) died or they incurred outrageous medical expenses. These hardships alone are difficult enough to overcome without the added burden of financial difficulties.

I have a client who is one of the most kind and caring people I have ever met. Her faith and love in Christ is powerful. Years ago, she and her children were left with a major financial burden when her husband, a pastor and sole bread winner for the family, passed away. She then had an emotional crisis to adapt to and had to find some way to pay the bills for herself and her children. After much effort to pull everything together, she was unable to. She was forced into bankruptcy, even though she had strong feelings against it. Although very close to the typical retirement age, she now has a job which she will have to work at for as long as she is physically able to. She is steadily saving toward a hopeful retirement some day. The point is, bad things happen to good people. A little more planning earlier in life could have saved the family from much added and unnecessary stress. A higher quality of life could have been preserved.

In conclusion, I believe insurance is a valuable tool. It can save you and your loved ones from unnecessary burdens in the future. Have you ever asked yourself, "What would my family do if I were to die today?" or "If I became disabled, what would be our source of income?" Please, make sure your family is prepared and taken care of.

Here is a strong testament for life insurance:
"I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. Moreover, no man knows when his hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so men are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them." Ecclesiastes 9:11-12.
