| Is There Security in Money? |
|
Security. Everyone wants to feel safe and secure. It's in our nature. So, how do we attain this security? Can money provide this? What does the Bible say about it? Security. Everyone wants to feel safe and secure. It's in our nature. So, how do we attain this security? The easy "Sunday School" answer is that we find our security in God. Do we really find that sense of security though? After accepting Jesus as my savior, I have felt secure. I have an inner peace from knowing that some day I'll be with my Lord in Heaven. That is not the type of security I'm talking about, however. Let me explain. Today, we feel that "security" is the ability to maintain and improve upon our financial standing. We worry about losing these "things" that we have attained. We worry that we won't have enough money to retire and whether or not we will be able to provide for our children's education. We worry about what would happen if our husband or wife were to pass away. How would we get by emotionally and financially? When we worry about these things, we don't feel secure. This often leads to stockpiling or hoarding of money so we can feel secure. Sadly though, this doesn't change anything. We still worry. The problem is that no amount of money can quench the desire for security. Even the extremely wealthy cannot fill their voids with money. Don't believe me? Look at these quotes: "I have made millions, but they have brought me no happiness" – John Rockefeller So, how can we feel secure and have peace? Through trusting in God and following His financial plan for you, you can feel secure. That's a difficult story to buy into isn't it? I think one reason we have trouble with this is that we tend to want to work for what we get. We think that we have to make it happen ourselves. This is why some people struggle with salvation. They want to "earn" it. Instead though, it is a gift. We don't deserve it, but God promises it. It is given by grace from our Heavenly Father. We must have faith in His providing powers. That does not mean that we sit idly and trust God will do everything for us. We still have to work for it, but the plan is set before us. We have to follow God's instructions. We must give control of our finances to him. We must learn to be good stewards and take action. This involves understanding God's will with money, tithing, prayer, budgeting, saving, investing, giving, and much more. The key is to stop worrying and start planning based on God's word. This is the key to true peace and security. Don't put off your responsibilities. Plan for them and act upon them now. "Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited |
